CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital:
A History Rich in Medical Milestones
Founded by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital has attended to Houstonians since 1887-- through epidemics, fires, floods, wars and baby booms--with great compassion and respect for human dignity.
As Houston's first general hospital, CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital set the standards upon which the city's modern day medical reputation is based. Many milestones mark its colorful history--among them a foundation of superb medical education. The hospital opened Houston's first school of nursing in 1905; and the physician training program it created in 1914 was among the nation's first to be approved by the American Medical Association.
Today CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital is one of Houston's largest acute care medical centers, with a campus that spans 12 Downtown Houston blocks. A major provider of managed care services to local corporations, it also offers comprehensive health care to Department of Defense beneficiaries.
We are proud to have adapted to the changing heath care environment while maintaining our values. CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital continues to focus on an important balance, treating individuals with the most progressive medical care, education and research available.
