Program Description
CHRISTUS St Joseph General Surgery Residency Program is integrated with Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. The Program also utilizes the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center for oncology rotations and Memorial Hermann Hospital for transplant rotations.
The surgery residents spend approximately 35% of their time at the integrated and affiliated institutions. The average Chief Resident at CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital completes the five-year training with over 1100 cases.
The program is approved for 3 categorical residents in each year of training. In addition, we accept 6 preliminary positions in the 1st year.
Most of the graduating residents go into private practice, many remaining on the staff at CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital or Brackenridge Hospital. Approximately 20% secure fellowships of their choice. In the past 5 years these have included cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, surgical oncology, and plastic surgery.
